Out of Sight and Zoopraxis – Photography Exhibits

Out of Sight: Eadwear Muybridge and Harold Edgerton

At certain moments in history, individuals created new forms of picture-making that revolutionized art and science. Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) and Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) were giants of early photography. Their images made time stand still. Their innovative experiments with camera technology will be on view in the exhibit Out of Sight at the Surrey Art Gallery from January 21 to March 5.

Zoopraxis: Eadweard Muybridge’s Animal Kingdom

In addition to making many serial photographs of human movement, the 19th-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge also used his pioneering multi-camera apparatus to make sequential images of mammals and birds. While at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1880s, he borrowed and photographed four-legged and winged subjects from the Philadelphia Zoo. This mini exhibition invites you to consider the legacies of these images on modern and contemporary wildlife photography and film.

Admission to all exhibitions and events is FREE unless otherwise noted (donations gratefully accepted).
