Marilyn Hurst Artist
In the early 90’s my life underwent a major transformation after discovering a hidden reservoir of creative energy. Having never considered painting before this time, from within there was a urge to begin. The first tentative steps were with portraiture, but since that time the work has expanded beyond anything dreamed or imagined.
Life thrives on change and the transition to becoming an artist has been a tremendous learning curve, developing a new found respect for the resolve which is necessary to make the art profession work for oneself.
Throwing caution to the wind in 1997 and moving to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with new husband/mentor, noted artist Chris MacClure and opening a 2nd storey studio/gallery is testimony to the creative spirit. Over the next 13 years our simple beginnings grew and morphed becoming the most respected art gallery in Los Cabos and the Golden Cactus Gallery’s eclectic collection of artists and art became a benchmark of excellence for the Southern Baja.
Running a gallery in a foreign country was challenging but through painting full time and curating the art in the gallery, art skills were honed and refined. As always it was the excitement of the Mexican culture that provided ongoing inspiration but it is the joy that comes from reaching within and letting the expression flow from the silence that gives life to the work.
Recently we were invited to be resident artists at the legendary hotel California in Todos Santos, Baja and spent some months painting and renewing our excitement for Mexico.
My paintings are a menage of life experience and creative energy. The landscapes, florals, and expressionist abstracts are reflective of life as a contemplative artist inspired by the colors of Mexico and the beauty of my home here in the pacific northwest. I am represented by dealers in BC and Alberta.
